A dozen theologians met together on Saturday 28 May at St Patrick’s Pontifical University for a symposium on “Synodality in a Theological Key.” The first section explored the roots of a synodal process within a spirituality of the Holy Spirit and a sense of scriptural precedents (such as Acts 15). The next section considered practice, looking at the synodal pathway in Killala diocese (2017-2022) and the recent synodal process in Dublin diocese, as well as the transformative power of dialogue in the local church. The afternoon session began by looking at implications of the synodal pathway for how church teaching and moral theology is developed, as well as exploring keywords for the synodal process. The final section considered future pathways, by looking at the New Ecclesial Movements as well as wider ecumenical and missional perspectives. Many of the contributions will be printed in forthcoming issues of the Furrow.
