‘Domhnall Ua Buachalla: An Exhibition’ will be launched in John Paul II library of Maynooth University at 7.00pm on Thursday, 10th March 2016. Born and raised in Maynooth, Domhnall Ua Buachalla led an active political life from very early on. An ardent supporter of the revival of the Irish language he joined the Gaelic League and later became a member of the IRB. He rejected John Redmond’s call to the Irish Volunteers to join the British Army in 1914 and went on to actively partake in the Easter Rising of April 1916. This culminated in his arrest and internment at Knutsford and Frongoch along with other noteworthy revolutionaries.  The execution of the leaders of the Easter Rising saw a rise in support for Irish independence from British rule which was evidenced in the 1918 elections seeing Domhnall Ua Buachalla successfully defeat the Home Rule candidate MP John O’Connor and taking his place in the first Dáil of January 1919.

The material has been kindly loaned to Maynooth University by Domhnall’s grandson, Mr Fintan Buckley.
