Module Aims

The aim of this module is (i) to expose students to a number of St. Augustine’s works; (ii) to display for students the overall shape of the body of Christian doctrine; (iii) to stimulate in students an appreciation for doctrine and its role in Christian discipleship; (iv) to help students identify theological elaborations of key doctrinal points that are typical of the Latin/Western theological tradition; (v) to familiarize students with different organizing principles for the exposition of the Christian faith.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain what a doctrine is, what the fundamental doctrines of the Christian tradition are, and how they are related to one another.
  • Situate doctrine in the life of a Christian, or to explain the role of doctrine in the Christian’s life.
  • Enumerate and describe some of the key theological contributions to the Latin theological tradition by St. Augustine
  • Compare and contrast the approaches that Augustine takes in presenting the faith in each of the instructional works (i.e., Enchiridion, De Fide et Symbol, De Catechizandi.)
